Just a follow-up on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in case anyone finds themselves in a similar situation...

I showed up to the new company’s location, sat down with HR and as we started to go over the paperwork, I put on my best “Whaaaa? This is surprising!” face and said that my l is ted supervisor, job title, and work location were different than what had been communicated to me. HR rep immediately stopped everything and asked for clarity. I told her what I had been told and why I responded the way I had. She made several phone calls, and we were off to the races!

I think the key phrase was something along the lines of “I signed this paperwork under the pretense that X, Y, and Z would still be the same as before. But now I see that they are changing, and I was not given a chance to discuss this prior to today. Who can I speak to to get an answer?”. After a solid hour of hemming and hawing and people saying “Look, just sign the paperwork and we’ll sort it out later!” the HR department manager ran in, called an end to the proceedings and proceeded to throw out everything. The HR department was arguably the smartest group of people involved in all of this.

Went back to the old company and it turns out I had my health insurance terminated and I am no longer on the payroll! I felt bad for my old/current HR people but they looked completely blindsided when I asked for any paperwork that said I was no longer an employee. So that’s where we’re at. Currently waiting on my old boss to come in so we can finalize something like a rewind back to how things were a few days ago.

How’s everyone else’s friday going?

So basically you are getting to keep the job you had beforehand that you weren’t actually fired from but just transferred without your knowledge to what amounts to a different job? That’s a really sucky situation but it seems like you’re doing alright managing it. Must be very stressful though.

I’ve worked for myself for the last six years, and the regular workaday world seem like the bullshit doubled while I was away. My last 9 to 5 ended when they were trying to Give me a retention bonus, open ended and on their terms with a contract that was ending. Would have had to say “how high shall I jump sir” all for less that they paid out to some asshole who wasn’t happy with his in-car breathalyser . A t least the branch manager got moved to sit in corner of a warehouse to wait out his years until retirement.

Every single day for the past year, I’ve entertained the “I should start my own company” thought. Might be a consultant, who knows?

My initial thought was that HR was looking out for you which is not their f unction. After readi ng your post, I realize HR is doing their job which is to protect the company and the side effect of that just happened to help you.  Lucky!

It is so seldom that HR people play the role of the cavalry, but this is a pleasant surprise. You needed someone on your side.

Man, what a complicated shit show.  I’m sorry you are going through this.  It has to be stressful, especially with everything so out of sorts. I’m glad you are getting some clarity and I hope things continue to trend towards positive.  I was laid off for a bit at the beginning of this and I wouldn’t wish the feeling of dread on anyone.

I wouldn’t feel too bad for them. This is part of what they’re supposed to be on top of.

They’re not on his side. They’re doing their job of protecting the company from any legal problems and he just lucked out that what was good for the company also happened to be good for him.

They were trying to/are breaking the law, and they know it. Assume that employers always  know they’re breaking the law. Stand your ground and contact an appropriate lawyer.

True. Either way, their needs aligned. My experience with HR people has uniformly been that all they are good for is filling out forms and following wrote procedures. Even t his little bit of initiative here seems  exceptional to me.

“Even this little bit of initiative here seems exceptional to me.”

yup, it is. But I’m sure it’s only because they realized there’s some legal exposure to the company from what happened to him .

They need to fix this because they broke the law. I have a business with multiple locations and each location is it’s own entity. W e have to ask people to move from one location to another; we just can’t order them to move unless it was stated in their job description when they were hired . We also have to provide job descriptions and new hire paperwork for each location for even shared employees . Your company followed the wrong protocol and now someone that understands labor law has stepped in to fix it . I feel for you since this isn’t your responsibility and haveing to figure out what is really going on is hard . Businesses need to understand that their employees should come first and doing crap like this is the wrong way to run a business.

Oh man.....wait until you hear that my “employment opportunity” was included in the sale of assets to this new company. I don’t know how I didn’t punch my old boss in the face, but wow.....

It’s funny how often this HR department seems to need to save this company from itself.
